Our approach

Our difference: human intelligence in the face of complexity

Algorithms provide data. We provide decisions backed by sailors and scientists who know the reality on the ground.

01

De-risked and better-budgeted projects

We step in as early as the design-office phase to align engineers’ vision with the reality sailors will face. Our role is to anticipate friction before the vessel even leaves port.

02

Real-time operational monitoring

Your project managers, your captains, and we all speak the same language. A weather forecaster gets directly involved in your project to provide you with the right information at the right time, acting as a trusted third party.

03

Decision-making security

We equip project managers with independent expert rationale to objectively justify every operational decision to executive management. Make decisions with complete peace of mind for fully controlled marine operations

Who we serve

Built for high-stakes operations

We do not supply off-the-shelf automated data. Our expertise targets high-stakes operations where there is no room for error.

Our expertise

Our Technical Arsenal

Our strategic support and advisory work rest on mastery of meteorological and oceanographic science. Here are the building blocks of expertise we deploy, tailor-made, to secure your operations.

Sensitive convoy weather routing

Route optimisation for towing operations, heavy lifts and exceptional transports requiring absolute precision on swell and currents.

Sailing vessel & expedition weather routing

Specialised tactical routing for wind-powered vessels, factoring in crew performance and safety constraints.

Custom weather bulletins

Hyper-localised marine forecasts, stripped of unnecessary noise, giving crews “little information, but the right information” at the critical moment.

24/7 weather monitoring

Constant monitoring of your operating areas with immediate alerts in case of unforeseen deterioration of conditions.

Measuring & downscalling

Deployment of sensors before and during operations to calibrate the forecast.

Statistics & climate studies (Hindcast)

Analysis of historical data to size your future projects and validate your operating windows (M-6).

How it works

Your partner from M-12 to post-operation

A clear support timeline, from budget planning to justifying the calls made at sea.

  1. 1
    M-12 TO M-3
    Anticipation

    Design phase

Budgetary integration of our “Safety / Insurance” line. Delivery of an HSE risk matrix to help the design office size the project and reassure insurers.

  2. 2
    M-1 to D-0
    Planning

    Pre-departure

Initial strategic routing. Direct briefing with the captain and shore team to validate the launch windows (“Go / No-Go”).

  3. 3
    During the operation
    Watch & mediation

    Real-time follow-up

Round-the-clock weather watch and concise bulletins. In a crisis, our “hotline” guarantees access to a cool-headed mediator to resolve operational dilemmas in real time.

  4. 4
    Post-operation
    Justification

    Reports & review

Detailed reports to justify calls made at sea — delays, detours — for finance management and authorities.

Trusted in the field

Cable-laying vessel routing · Brest → Bermuda

The challenge

In late winter, the captain of a cable-layer, who had heard of us through word-of-mouth, called us shortly before departing Brest for Bermuda. Conditions in the Bay of Biscay were complex: a sustained low-pressure system, gale- to storm-force winds, and locally heavy cross seas that could easily put the vessel in difficulty. Postponing departure was hardly an option given commercial pressures.

The Circum intervention

Following an onboard visit during the port call and a comprehensive risk assessment, trust was established. We proposed a radically different route: shifting further north, far off the direct track, to take the heaviest seas abaft the beam. The vessel maintained good speed, maneuverability, and limited roll. Though initially hesitant, the captain approved the strategy, which we then executed in real time through close monitoring until the severe conditions passed.

The result

  • Vessel safety preserved
  • ETA secured
  • Fuel savings (favourable conditions)
  • Cost to the shipowner negligible compared to potential losses

I want to thank you, Maxime, and your whole team for the excellent routing since our departure from Brest. The quality, speed and availability were greatly appreciated, especially in the very bad weather we encountered at the start.

A WORD FROM THE FOUNDER

Maxime Le Roux, founder of Circum Océan

I founded Circum after spending several years as a captain in the merchant marine and offshore operations. This experience gave me an in-depth understanding of the profitability and safety challenges faced by seafarers and shipowners during critical operations.

The vision my team and I share is that the reality of weather hazards does not have to be passively endured, but can be de-risked from the very inception of a project.

We position ourselves as a facilitating partner, ensuring seamless and constant communication between shore and sea, transforming weather uncertainty into controlled operational decisions.
